June Birthstone: Pearl

Pearls are the oldest known gemstone; they do not need to be cut, faceted or polished to show their natural beauty.

Pearl is the birthstone for those lucky enough to be born in June.

Pearls have a rich history as a sacred and revered gem. In ancient Greece, pearls were thought to be formed when the tears of joy that fell from the eyes of goddess Aphrodite hardened. They were also used to prepare medicines in Europe, Persia and China as pearls were believed to be a cure for insanity.

In 1893 Kokichi Mikimoto developed the first cultured pearl, read The Story of Cultured Pearls to gain a better understanding of natural and cultured pearls.  Available in many different shapes and colours, the larger, rounder, smoother and lustrous the pearl, the more valuable it is.

Discover our Pearl Guide to learn all about the different variety of pearls. Steeped in superstition, pearls are said to signify faithfulness, friendship and loyalty.
